Old Montreal is one of this city’s most popular tourist attractions teeming with people on any given day — summer as well as winter.

The Association pour la mobilité active de Ville-Marie would like to replicate the successful rejuvenation the small Spanish city of Pontevedra underwent by pushing cars and parking to the fringes and turning over the tightly-packed centre to foot traffic.

The association has launched a petition, which is supported by over a dozen community groups, calling on the borough to turn more area in Old Montreal over to pedestrians.

One request in the petition is to change rue de la Commune, into a protected bicycle path, with a smooth surface, along a physically separated pedestrian path.
