The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) is an incredible light show that occurs in the northern hemisphere. The infamous light show occurs when electrically charged particles released from the sun collide with gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The best time to catch the light show from Montreal is tonight February 1st, between 9: 30 PM and 11:00 PM. At the moment all is a go, as the current forecast for tonight is cold temperates with clear skies, which are the ideal conditions for viewing the Aurora.

Auroras are difficult to predict with precision. They have stops and starts (known as sub-storms). If you are out there, you need to be patient and lucky.

The Kp number measures an Aurora’s strength and goes from 0 being very weak, to 9 being very active. Therefore the higher the Kp number, the larger the Aurora. Currently, Montreal is around 5Kp, view the image below.
